What is a Deep Neural Network (DNN)?

Highly Water Resistant and “Life Proof”

Of real significance is the superior water resistance provided by Phonak Audeo Infinio hearing aids. They have multiple layers of moisture, dust and dirt protection affording them an Ingress Protection Rating that exceeds the industry average of iP68.

The exterior has a hydrophobic coating which causes water and moisture to instantly bead and slide off. The microphone inlets and ports have been redesigned into a labyrinth layout so moisture has little chance of reaching the microphones.

Phonak claims that theirs is the first hearing aid technology to fully exploit an AI systems ability to separate speech from noise.

Spherical Speech Clarity is an AI based solution designed to differentiate the desired speech signal from unwanted noise, effectively removing undesirable sound while maintaining the speech signal in real-time. This improves Signal-To-Noise Ratio by up tot 10dB which effectively doubles the ability to follow speech in competing noise.

This process is powered by Phonak’s Deep Spheric Optimised Neural Integrated Chip (DEEPSONIC™) and the Audio Quality Estimator DNN.

Steps in Signal Processing:

Sound Scene Classification: Signal processing starts with AutoSense 6.0 analysing the sound scene to determine the type of processing required to maximise user benefit within the specific context.
Following sound scene classification hearing aid microphones are adjusted to restore a degree of spatial awareness.
In the next Step Spheric Speech Clarity identifies and removes unwanted noise from the audio signal, retaining only speech sound. This is the work of the Deep Neural Network (DNN) that was trained with 4.5 million parameters and 22 million sound samples for this purpose. The DNN computes a 64 frequency mask that separates speech from noise and then applies it to the audio signal.

What is a Deep Neural Network (DNN)

Describing electronic computational systems as neural networks is an analogy. Calculations in artificial neural networks although related are not the same as the ones that occur in biological brains. A single layer in a Neural Network (NN) is built from simple operations of largely addition and multiplications. With Inputs and parameters that affect outputs. In the case of Phonak’s Spheric Speech Clarity the Input is the full sound spectrogram containing 64 frequencies and phases, so there can be from x1 to x128.

A Deep Neural Network (DNN) is built from chaining multiple layers of calculations together. So, DNN’s are complex computational models that simulate the way the human brain processes information. DNN’s allows vast amounts of parallel computation to occur which allow them to detect complex patterns in sound, make predictions, and solve tasks.

Training a Deep Neural Network

Training the Deep Neural Network involved the use of an Audio Quality Estimator taken from a huge sample of human perception based preferred audio quality. Approximately 350 humans rated the noise, sound quality and overall preference of 30,000 sound files resulting in nearly a million human ratings. These audio files rated on:

How much noise does it contain?
How Good is the overall sound quality? Are there any distortions?
Overall, How much do people like how it sounds?

The result is a DNN that can predict human ratings on any piece of audio data. This assists with the optimum balance of speech clarity and sound quality in any acoustic environment.
