Description
Phonak Audéo EON Sphere AI Hearing Aids (E50R)
Premium AI technology for clearer conversation in background noise
The Phonak Audéo EON Sphere E50 is a mid-range model in Phonak’s EON hearing aid family. It is designed for people who want strong support in complex listening environments.
Suitable for situations like restaurants, social gatherings, and small-group conversations. EON Sphere uses a dedicated artificial intelligence chip to separate speech from surrounding noise in real time, helping conversations stand out more clearly.
Key Improvements:
- Smaller & Lighter: 25% smaller and 20% lighter
- Long-Lasting Rechargeable Battery: Up to 38 hours of battery life. Convenient and Rechargeable.
- Speech Clarity in Noise: Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 provides clear speech from any direction, with an impressive 10 dB SNR improvement in complex group conversations.
- Improved Wind Noise Reduction: Windblock 2.0 reduces wind noise by up to 50 dB and improves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by up to 30 dB.
Clearer speech
In busy environments, the person speaking may not always be directly in front of you. Phonak’s Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 identifies and enhances speech from different directions while reducing competing background noise.
This may help you follow changing speakers more comfortably without continually turning towards each person or manually adjusting your hearing aids.
Powerful AI processing in a smaller design
EON Sphere combines two specialised processing chips. The HYPERSONIC AI chip handles the demanding task of separating speech from noise, while Phonak’s ERA chip manages everyday sound processing and wireless connectivity. The new Hypersonic AI chip provides “Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 which delivers all-round speech separation from noise. Reportedly, it enables up to a 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio improvement. So it can make speech stand out from background noise by up to 10 dB—bringing the voice you want to hear into clearer focus while reducing the impact of unwanted surrounding noise.
It is 37% more energy efficient than the former Deepsonic AI chip. This enables a smaller battery and therefore a smaller form factor.
Despite this additional processing power, EON Sphere is smaller and lighter than the previous Sphere Infinio generation. Its discreet receiver-in-canal design sits comfortably behind the ear, with a thin wire connecting to the receiver positioned inside the ear canal.
Automatically adapts as your surroundings change
Phonak’s AutoSense OS AI 8.0 continually analyses the sounds around you and automatically selects an appropriate combination of settings. According to Phonak literature, the system scans the environment 700 times per second to automatically blend amplification (gain), multiband adaptive directional microphones and noise reduction for optimised comfort and clarity.
Whether you move from a quiet room into a café, walk outdoors or join a group conversation, the hearing aids adjust without requiring you to continually change programs. EON Sphere E90 provides the most complete level of automatic sound processing available within the EON range.
Improved comfort outdoors
Wind can make conversation difficult and may create an unpleasant rushing sound through hearing aid microphones. WindBlock 2.0 is designed to reduce wind noise while maintaining access to speech, providing greater comfort when walking, exercising or spending time outdoors.
Rechargeable for all-day use
Phonak Audéo EON Sphere is rechargeable and provides up to approximately 38 hours of use from a full charge, depending on your hearing loss, selected settings, streaming and individual use.
The new Phonak EON ChargerGo has a built-in lithium-ion battery that holds several reserve charge cycles. Ideal if you are travelling, as the hearing aids will automatically switch off and charge on the move once inserted into the charging dock. The other “Charger RIC EON” does need to be plugged into the mains power for the hearing aids to switch off and be on the charge.
EasyGuard domes are also available. Their sealed protective design helps prevent earwax from entering the receiver and can reduce the need to regularly replace traditional wax filters.
Connect with phones, televisions and more
Phonak’s Made for all connectivity lets EON Sphere connect directly to a wide range of compatible Bluetooth devices, rather than being limited to one phone system.
Connectivity options include:
- Direct streaming from compatible Apple and Android phones
- Hands-free phone calls
- Connection with compatible tablets, computers and televisions
- Auracast broadcast audio
- Control through the myPhonak app
- Compatibility with Phonak Roger wireless microphones and TV Connector

Amazing Technologies Working in Concert
For over 75 years, Phonak has been committed to addressing the number one concern for people living with hearing loss and that is to improve their ability to understand speech in noise. The ability to understand in noise is one of the most important predictors for hearing aid satisfaction.
Adaptive Directional Microphone Technology:
A well established way to improve speech understanding in noise is the use of adaptive directional microphone systems. Two or more microphones work together to prioritise input from a specific direction and can adapt the focal patterns (polar patterns) to focus on the speech sound and steer away from dominant noise sources. Phonak introduced StereoZoom in 2012, which used the input from the pair of microphones on the left hearing aid and compared and coordinated the inputs from the right hearing aid in real time to create a virtual 8-microphone network and create a super-directional, or “beamforming”, focus on the target speech signal. This substantially improved the signal-to-noise ratio SNR
Spherical Speech Clarity
Phonak claims that theirs is the first hearing aid technology to fully exploit an AI system’s ability to separate speech from noise.
Spherical Speech Clarity is an AI-based solution designed to differentiate the desired speech signal from unwanted noise, effectively removing undesirable sound while maintaining the speech signal in real time. This improves Signal-To-Noise Ratio by up to 10 dB, which effectively doubles the ability to follow speech in competing noise.
This process is powered by Phonak’s Deep Spheric Optimised Neural Integrated Chip (DEEPSONIC™) and the Audio Quality Estimator DNN.
Steps in Signal Processing:
- Sound Scene Classification: Signal processing starts with AutoSense 6.0 analysing the sound scene to determine the type of processing required to maximise user benefit within the specific context.
- Following sound scene classification hearing aid microphones are adjusted to restore a degree of spatial awareness.
- In the next Step Spheric Speech Clarity identifies and removes unwanted noise from the audio signal, retaining only speech sound. This is the work of the Deep Neural Network (DNN) that was trained with 4.5 million parameters and 22 million sound samples for this purpose. The DNN computes a 64 frequency mask that separates speech from noise and then applies it to the audio signal.
What is a Deep Neural Network (DNN)
Describing electronic computational systems as neural networks is an analogy. Calculations in artificial neural networks although related are not the same as the ones that occur in biological brains. A single layer in a Neural Network (NN) is built from simple operations of largely addition and multiplications. With Inputs and parameters that affect outputs. In the case of Phonak’s Spheric Speech Clarity the Input is the full sound spectrogram containing 64 frequencies and phases, so there can be from x1 to x128.
A Deep Neural Network (DNN) is built from chaining multiple layers of calculations together. So, DNN’s are complex computational models that simulate the way the human brain processes information. DNN’s allows vast amounts of parallel computation to occur which allow them to detect complex patterns in sound, make predictions, and solve tasks.
Training a Deep Neural Network
Training the Deep Neural Network involved the use of an Audio Quality Estimator taken from a huge sample of human perception-based preferred audio quality. Approximately 350 humans rated the noise, sound quality and overall preference of 30,000 sound files, resulting in nearly a million human ratings. These audio files rated on:
- How much noise does it contain?
- How Good is the overall sound quality? Are there any distortions?
- Overall, How much do people like how it sounds?
The result is a DNN that can predict human ratings on any piece of audio data. This contributes to the optimum balance of speech clarity and sound quality in any acoustic environment.
