Are Oticon Hearing Aids Waterproof?
March 25, 2026
Oticon hearing aids are among the most technologically advanced hearing aid devices on the market. However, Oticon hearing aids are not listed as 100% waterproof.
Oticon hearing aids may not be completely waterproof, but the aids are designed with an impressive level of water resistance. The following Oticon hearing aid models have an IP68 rating – the highest level of water and dust resistance available for hearing aid devices.
How Water-Resistant Are Oticon Hearing Aids?
An IP rating of IP68 can be broken into two parts – the first number (6) indicates the level of protection against dust, while the second number (8) measures the level of water resistance.
At a resistance level of 8, Oticon hearing aids are rated to withstand continuous immersion in water for up to 1 metre for at least 30 minutes. Note that the rating is only tested with fresh water – salt or chlorinated water can be more damaging. The risk of water damage to the hearing aid device will increase beyond this depth and time limit.
In addition, an Oticon hearing aid with an IP68 rating can withstand:
- Dripping water on the surface of the device
- Water sprays and splashes
- Powerful water jets (like from a garden hose)
Despite the IP rating, it is still recommended to keep your Oticon hearing aids away from moisture. You should not wear them while showering or swimming, and keep the devices in an enclosed container when outside and exposed to heavy rain or at the beach.
Which Oticon Hearing Aid Models Have an IP68 Rating?
Nearly all Oticon hearing aid devices have an IP68 rating, including:
- Oticon Intent – The flagship model, featuring the world’s first 4D-Sensor technology. Available in miniRITE and miniBTE.
- Oticon Zeal – The latest and most advanced model, released in Australia in 2026. Available in a new NXT In-the-Ear.
- Oticon Real – Uses RealSound technology to minimise disruptive sounds like wind and sudden loud sounds. Available in miniRITE and miniBTE.
- Oticon Jet/Jet PX – An affordable model equipped with Deep Neural Network (DNN) and AI sound processing. Available in BTE, RITE, IIC, CIC, ITC, and ITE.
- Oticon Ruby – Entry-level rechargeable hearing aid with Bluetooth connectivity. Available in BTE and RITE.
- Oticon Zircon – Built on the Polaris platform to provide “OpenSound” (360-degree access to speech). Available in BTE and RITE.
What to Do When Hearing Aids Get Wet
If your Oticon hearing aids get wet on the surface (from rain or when forgetting to take them out before a shower), simply pat down the devices gently with a cloth to remove any moisture. Try not to rub the hearing aid vigorously with a cloth, as this can push water inside the device.
However, if your Oticon hearing aids have been submerged in water, more care should be taken to avoid any water damage, particularly if there are cracks or gaps in the surface of the hearing aid device where water could seep through.
After removing the hearing aids from the water and patting the surface dry, remove any wax guards that may be trapping water inside. If they have been submerged in unclean water liquids, you should also clean the hearing aids completely. Place the hearing aids close to a dehumidifier overnight, or in a bowl of uncooked rice. Do not use a hairdryer to blow out any excess moisture – the heat from the hairdryer can result in damage to the device.
You should not attempt to wear or activate hearing aids that have been submerged for at least a few hours (ideally overnight). If the hearing aids do not work after this drying period or are not working properly, a repair may be necessary. Take the hearing aids to your local audiologist in Perth to have them inspected and arranged for repair.
