Oticon is one of the world leading hearing aid manufacturers available in Australia. They have developed the ability to have some of their latest hearing aid models programmed remotely. A virtual appointment is scheduled with the Audiologist and the adjustments occur in ‘real time’ in your ‘real world’ environment. There are numerous benefits to being able to utilise this powerful facility and a number of pre-requisites we’ll discuss in this article.

Major Benefitsover adjustments performed during traditional ‘in clinic’ visits include:

Adjustments occur in ‘real time’ in your ‘real world’ environment.

Real Time Programming:You hearing aids can be adjusted immediately based on your feedback. Simply walk around your home or office after an adjustment and let your Audiologist know whether it made an improvement or not. This truly facilitates a fine-tuning process that could never previously be attained.

Ease Of Access: You save time, money and effort travelling to the clinic. Instead you can access your Audiologist from where ever and whenever it is convenient. Simply schedule the virtual appointment as you would an “in clinic visit.” Just think no commute time, traffic or parking hassles. Purely time and energy efficient immediate service.

Oticon Remote Care Pre-requisites:

You Need an Apple iPhone

At present Oticon have developed their “Remote Care” to work through their “Remote Care App”. This needs to be installed on your iPhone. Your Audiologist will help you install the App and pair it with your hearing aids. The app is compatible with iPhones from models 5s to Xs as follows:

iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus & iPhone 5s.

Require an in Person First Fitting – Our Alternative

Oticon have designed their Remote Care work flow to ensure an “in person”

first fitting at a clinic is delivered. This is to facilitate an accurate first fitting with Real Ear Measurement (REM) verification and eliminate ear health concerns that could contra-indicate hearing aid fitting. Another non-disclosed reason for this is to protect their national networks of manufacturer owned clinics. They have locked certain features of the programming software so as to prevent remote hearing tests (in-situ gram) and electronic feedback management.

Our Alternative

Harmony Hearing & Audiology can deliver the in-person appointment at any stage of the rehabilitation process. If you forward your Audiogram this Initial Fitting (Programming) can be performed at our clinics. We will then securely mail you the hearing aids and perform the remote fine tuning during a scheduled virtual appointment. We have also developed our own system of remote programming with all software features unlocked. We care therefore perform a new remote hearing test and run the electronic feedback manager. Ideal if you notice change or have fluctuating hearing levels. (Please contact us to discuss)

As a progressive practice we see the great benefits in incorporating eHealth systems such as Oticon’s Remote Care in our routine practice. We continually strive to improve our clients experience. To ensure you hear as well as possible we utilise the very latest and best technologies. We believe Oticon have done a great job with developing their form of Tele-Audiology they call “Remote Care”. We appreciate that it is a real time “Synchronous” process with the client. This ensures ‘real time’ & ‘real place’ client and clinician interaction for fine tuning. It also greatly improves accessibility to quality service when it’s needed.

We believe the traditional model of only adjusting hearing aids in a controlled clinical environment (usually quiet) and sending the clients out into their real world (noisy) environments to see if those adjustments were beneficial is an erroneous process. Now thanks to the advancement of tele-communication technologies it is now also a redundant process.
